Bartlett was seeking a highly qualified Internal Audit Manager to replace a highly successful predecessor who was being promoted into the company CFO positions. After a lengthy and unsuccessful internal recruitment effort that included over 40+ applicants, the Company turned to Michael Shirley Associates (since renamed Cornerstone Kansas City) for results.
After a meeting with the VP of Operations, the CFO and the previous Internal Audit Manger / CFO, we developed a strategy to identify candidates from the region with very specific backgrounds in Internal Audit, and more specifically grain auditing with emphasis in mark-to-market accounting experience.
Bartlett had been successful with identifying candidates through traditional means but were unsuccessful attracting the right candidates with a very specific background. We typically find that traditional methods of recruitment that revolve around job board postings do not work well especially when the job parameters are unusually difficult, narrow and specific.
Solution & Outcome
Our solution was to begin heavy networking within the industry to identify individuals and companies to target. Our lead Partner on this project used the firms existing network of accounting and agri-business professionals that would lead to several hundred market contacts. This would eventually net four highly qualified candidates within the immediate 250 mile radius of Kansas City.
All four were phone screened by the client, two were interviewed in person and an offer was made and accepted by their first choice candidate in less than 60 days.
The candidate selected had a background in public accounting, 15 plus years of domestic and international audit experience with ADM, is a CPA and CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) and was recruited from the local market. The candidate was passive and would not have been found or secured through traditional recruitment channels as evidenced by the fact the candidate ironically was working in the same building as Bartlett!
Outstanding candidate; speed to hire; candidate choices; professional, personalized, results!
The outstanding candidate was hired in less than 60 days. Our well established network of industry contacts from over 29 years in the business was the key to recruitment success. The individual recruited appears to “fit” well within the organization, is well qualified for the role and when things go well will be ideally positioned for future advancement within the finance department.
