There is a saying: “Expectations are future disappointments”. While this may be true, in some circumstances, all expectations need is a little management. However, while managing our own expectations is a challenge, managing client expectations can be a delicate process when working in a service industry.
Providing excellent service is our life blood. It is what we hang our hat on and what separates an excellent recruiting partner from a “good” recruiting partner. Tenacity and a proven process are the tools used to meet or exceed the wants, needs and expectations of clients. The challenge is when client expectations wander outside of what the market has to offer.
The recruitment process is a partnership between recruiter and client that relies on frank and honest communication between partners, working toward the common goal of finding the best talent. XXX for $$$ is what the client wants; however, the market may only supply XX for $$$ and that is where communication is key. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as the “perfect” candidate outside of a candidate that is open to the opportunity, location, and compensation. Market forces, economy, title, compensation, location are all variables to be considered. Open communication between recruiter and hiring manager should include conversations about what the market has to offer that is closest to client expectation, current compensation required to attract the talent, availability of talent based on specificity, internal equity issues and how the team will come together to manage what the client should expect from the market. While these conversations can sometimes be challenging, honesty, flexibility and open communication are imperative for the team to secure a successful outcome.
A proven search process married to realistic client expectations is the foundation of a successful partnership and search outcome.
