When opportunity knocks, do you answer? As an executive recruiter, I reach out to many people throughout my day to make them aware of opportunities in the marketplace that may be of interest to them or to people they may know. Unfortunately, many of my attempts to connect go unanswered. I‘m sure this happens for many reasons…people are busy; people aren’t looking for a job right now, etc. Oftentimes I hear from these same people when they are actively looking to make a change in employment.
You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. When I do connect with people, most if not all are well employed. These are smart cookies. I don’t have to tell them because they already know: the best time to look for a job is while you still have one. It is always a good idea to know your value in the market. For people who have been at a job for a long time, comfort and familiarity can be a satisfaction and income killer. “Internal equities” can stifle both upward mobility and increased income.
Over 20 years ago I heard from a recruiter. I had just had my daughter and was returning to work with my employer of 16 years. Upon return, I was told the firm was relocating to Texas. I had no interest in relocation, so I had started a new job and had been there one week. For some reason, I responded to the recruiter. I met with him, discussed the opportunity, gave my notice and started the following Monday. I have been there since and LOVE it. So next time you hear from me, or any recruiter, give some thought to answering even if it is only to connect. Like me, you may stumble on a new position that is perfect for you.
