“I can’t wait until things get back to normal.” “How are you adjusting to the new normal?” I hear these phrases all the time, so I stopped to ask myself, why be normal?
Many times, in business normal equals status quo; the way we’ve always done things. But smart companies are asking if that is the best approach? The pandemic has illuminated a new way to be successful and, perhaps even more important, a new way to help employees achieve a higher level of satisfaction which leads to a more productive employee. In a survey conducted by Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce, 46% of businesses are planning to continue a work from home or alternate option when it comes to work setting. With more companies offering unique and flexible work schedules in and out of the office, what was once considered an experiment has now proven to be an efficient and effective way to do business. The company benefits from the more committed and productive employee and the employee benefits from a greater sense of autonomy and balance. All boats rise.
With control of the pandemic in sight, I encourage companies and employees alike to resist the urge to “return to normal”.
