Executive Recruiting Halfway Through the Year: What Is Your Why?

Halfway Through the Year: What Is Your Why?

July 13, 2026 by Dan Heiman

We are officially halfway through the year, which makes this a natural time to pause, reflect, and ask a question that has the power to shape how we approach the months ahead:

What is your why?

Why do you show up every day? Why do you keep pushing when things feel challenging? Why do you keep learning, growing, setting goals, and holding yourself accountable?

For some, the answer is family. For others, it may be career growth, financial stability, leadership, personal success, or the desire to make an impact. At Cornerstone, those motivations are personal and different for each of us. For some team members, it means working toward buying a home, planning a trip, purchasing a new car & boat, paying for a wedding, or building a stronger future for their children. Everyone’s why looks a little different, and that is exactly what makes it so powerful.

At work, it is easy to talk about goals in terms of growth, revenue, projects, deadlines, and results. Those things matter, but they are rarely the full reason people stay motivated. Behind most professional goals is something more personal. A goal to grow professionally may really be about creating more stability for your family. A goal to develop as a leader may really be about proving to yourself what you are capable of. A goal to take on more responsibility may really be about building the future you have been working toward.

When you know what you are working toward outside of work, it can change the way you approach the work in front of you.

That does not mean every day is easy and motivation is always high. But it does mean the work has a bigger purpose behind it.

At Cornerstone, this is something we have been thinking about as we reflect on the first half of the year and look ahead to the second. At the beginning of the year, our team sat down together to build our 2026 V/TO goals. V/TO is part of the Entrepreneurial Operating System, or EOS, and it helps create clarity around three core areas: vision, traction, and goals. In simple terms, vision is where the business is going, traction is how you are going to get there, and goals are the measurable milestones that help bridge the gap between the two.

For our team, this process helps us understand where we are headed as a firm and how each person’s work contributes to the bigger picture. But more importantly, it gives us a chance to connect our professional goals back to the personal reasons that keep us motivated. Because big goals do not happen by accident, and neither does personal growth.

Each quarter, we revisit our firmwide goals and create individual SMART goals that help move us closer to the larger vision. These goals keep us focused, accountable, and intentional with the work we are doing every day. We also set learning and development goals each quarter, because growth is not just about numbers. It is about sharpening our skills, challenging ourselves, staying curious, and continuing to become better at what we do.

But the goals themselves are only part of the story. The deeper question is whether those goals are helping us move closer to the lives we are trying to build. A goal without action is just an idea. A vision without traction is just a hope. And hard work without a clear “why” can start to feel disconnected from what matters most.

Halfway through the year, this is a reminder we are carrying with us.

Our goals keep us focused, our personal “whys” keep us motivated, and our shared commitment to growth keeps us moving in the same direction.

We each have our own reason for doing the work we do. But when individual motivation is connected to shared goals, it creates purpose, accountability, and momentum.

As we move into the second half of the year, it is worth asking:

What is your why, and are your goals helping you move closer to it?
